Stranger Waves: Indie Pop for the Masses
Stranger Waves are a self-proclaimed “dreamy neon pop” band that got their start in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and are now bringing their sound to Philadelphia and Brooklyn. With these four artists, indie-pop has a brand new band with significant potential. They currently have three songs out on streaming platforms-“R.U.N,” “Words That Kill,” and “Wicked Bugs,” all of which knock it out of the park.
Indie-pop is a tricky genre to establish yourself in if you don’t have a unique sound, and Stranger Waves has just that. If I had to put it into words- their music is like Mazzy Star and Sonic Youth’s Gen-Z cousin; the type of songs you’d play when you’re feeling like the main character of a coming of age movie. So many bands strive for those niche Lady Bird meets 10 Things I Hate About You vibes, but few actually achieve that.

The band has a brand new single, “Backwards,” that’ll be released next month and I’m beyond excited to hear what they do next. If you’re in the Philly/New York area, they have a few shows coming up (see below), with many more to come this summer. I highly recommend checking out the band; they have passion and incredible potential, which will take them to the next level as they establish themselves in the genre.
